Luther Johnson Jr., 82 of 6 North Fernwood Street Liberty, SC slept peacefully away on January 30, 2013 with his wife and son at his bedside holding his hand. He was born in Pickens County the son of the late Luther Johnson, Sr. and Eva Louise Anderson Johnson.
He received his Bachelors of Art's Degree from Benedict College, Columbia, SC, and Master of Science from North Carolina A and T State University, additional training at Penn State University, and studies in religion at Clemson University.
Mr. Johnson a retired principal of Geer Elementary and Belton Middle School, Belton, SC. He was one of the oldest licensed funeral directors in the state of South Carolina. Licensed in 1955 when licensed were first came out. He was a member and officer of the South Carolina Mortician Association (SCMA) and National Funeral Directors and Morticians Association, where he previously held the offices of Sgt-At-Arms, and State Chaplain. He also a member of Pickens County Retired Teachers Association. The SCMA named him mortician of the year in 1987 and again in 2010. He was a member and Active Deacon of New Hope Baptist Church, Secretary of Oolenoy River Baptist Association, Liberty Chambers of Commerce, a Mason and a member of the Banneker Lodge No. 137, and past Co-chairman of the Pickens County Branch NAACP Freedom Fund Banquet, a board member of the Sarlins Community Library and a multitude of other organizations too numerous to name.
He is survived by his wife, a beloved son, Luther Johnson III, one granddaughter, Washica (Shawn) Brazeal-Todd, one great-grandson Keaven, and one great-granddaughter Eboni, one sister-in-law, and two brother-in-laws, and nieces and nephews. His first wife Evelyn Martin Johnson preceded him in death.
Services will be 2:00pm Tuesday at the Easley Union Missionary Baptist Church, Easley, SC by the Rev. Dr's J.O. Rich, C.L. Cruel, O.T Hill, James Blassingame, James Hallums, S.A. Mattison, Samuel Neeley, and South Carolina's First Lady of song recording artist, Loretta Holloway.
Interment will follow at Westview Cemetery Liberty, SC.
The family is located at the home and will received friends from 3:00 - 8:00pm Monday at the Luther Johnson Funeral Home (formally S.C. Franks of Liberty) 301 E. Main St. Liberty, S.C. One of his several favorite quotes by Alfred Lloyd Tenneyson:

Heights of great men achieved and kept,

Were not achieved by sudden flight.

But they, while their companions slept,

Were toiling upward thru the night!
